Scottish Government Urban Rural Classification 2020

The Scottish Government Urban Rural Classification provides a consistent way of defining urban and rural areas across Scotland. The classification is based upon two main criteria: population and accessibility.

Please note that the Scottish Government Urban Rural Classification 2020 - Postcode 2022-1 Lookup supporting document, initially realised alongside this publication has now been removed. This is due to the release of a new version of the Scottish Postcode Directory (SPD) in August 2022 by National Records of Scotland (NRS). The SPD has a Scottish Government Urban Rural Classification 2020 lookup incorporated into it. Two versions of the SPD are released each year by NRS. The most recent version of the SPD can be can be found on the NRS website.

In addition to this, a new supporting document has been added: Scottish Government Urban Rural Classification 2020 - Travel To Work Area by Urban Rural Classification. This supporting document shows the percentage of the population living in each Urban Rural Classification category for each Travel to Work Area, based on postcode population estimates.
