Assessing fisheries displacement by other licensed marine activities: good practice guidance

This project developed ‘Good Practice Guidance for Assessing Fisheries Displacement’ through a detailed literature review and consultation with the ScotMER Fish and Fisheries Receptor Group (FFSRG), commercial fisheries industry, offshore energy and regulatory sectors.

Footnotes

8. Scottish Zone encompass the waters out to 200 NM from the Scottish coast, as per the Scotland Act 1998.

9. The terms primary and secondary displacement are not consistently used within commercial fisheries EIAs and it is suggested they are and as such defined here.

11. Marine Scotland publish fisheries statistics annually (Marine Scotland, 2020) but these do not provide values or effort by fishing method and are for the Scottish Zone only.

17. As of 2012, EU legislation required all Member State vessels over 12 m in length to have VMS installed. However, there have been delays in the release of this data by MMO and data is only available for vessels > 15 m. Direct data requests can be made to the MMO for 12 – 15 m vessels.

18. Effort in kilowatt hours: calculated by multiplying the time associated with each VMS report in hours by the engine power of the vessel concerned at the time of the activity.

19. Fishing Activity for UK Vessels 15m and over 2016.

20. Further relevant information is available in The Fishing Liaison with Offshore Wind and Wet Renewables Group guidance documents (FLOWW 2014, 2015).

21. The speed range which is used should be specific to the fishing methods which are present in the study area and are often less than 6 knots.
