Retail sales index: 2019 Q1

The Retail Sales Index for Scotland (RSIS) is a quarterly measure of the goods sold by retailers in Scotland. It is an important early indicator of how the economy is performing and of the strength of consumer spending.

During 2019 Quarter 1 the volume of retail sales in Scotland (adjusted for inflation and seasonal effects) grew 1.2% in Scotland.

The value of retail sales in Scotland (adjusted for seasonal effects but not inflation) grew by 1.1% during 2019 Quarter 1. 

Over the year since 2018 Quarter 1, the volume of retail sales in Scotland has grown by 1.4%. Over the same period, the value of sales grew by 2.0%, and average retail store prices (the implied deflator) grew by 0.7%.

The equivalent figures for Great Britain as a whole, produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), are an increase of 1.6% in volume and an increase of 1.6% in value in the latest quarter.
