Making Scotland a safer and stronger place means developing a coherent penal policy which is tough on serious crime, offers swift justice and community payback.
It also means encouraging a culture of personal and collective responsibility and promoting opportunities. But the Scottish Government firmly believes that prevention is better than cure and the underlying causes of crime must be tackled.

The Scottish Government are working to tackle violent crime and improve safety in communities. It is doing this through tough and effective enforcement measures and longer term work to educate young people.
