Men and Women in Scotland: A Statistical Profile

Chapter 3: Education & Childcare

In 1999, over 63% of children whose entry to Primary 1 had been deferred, were boys.
In 1999, Primary 7 girls were consistently reaching higher levels of attainment in reading, writing and mathematics, with the gap being particularly noticeable in writing, where only 40% of boys were reaching level D, whilst 55% of girls reached that level.
In 1999, over 93% of teachers (FTE) in publicly funded primary schools were female although just under 78% of headteachers were female.
At Standard Grade in 1999, with the exception of mathematics, English and French which were generally the most popular subjects, it would appear that physics, computer studies, physical education and craft design were the predominant subjects taken by males, whereas females were more likely to take biology and office and information studies.
In 1999, 39% of girls in S4 achieved 5 or more Standard Grades at grade 1 or 2, whereas the corresponding figure for boys was 28%.
In 1999, 26% of girls achieved 3 or more Highers at Grades A to C, while the corresponding figure for boys was 20%.
At Higher Grade in 1999 approximately one in four boys took physics compared with one in ten girls, computing studies was not in the top ten subjects for females, and there were no languages in the top ten subjects for males.
In September 1999, nearly 54% of teachers (FTE) in publicly funded secondary schools in Scotland were female, but over 88% of Headteachers and over 77% of Depute Headteachers were male.
In 1998/99 67% of females between 16 and 21 participated in some form of education. The corresponding figure for males was 62%. This was mostly accounted for by the higher proportion of females (29%) than males (23%) in full time Higher Education.
Nearly 93% of exclusions from Local Authority primary schools and nearly 67% of exclusions from Local Authority secondary schools in 1998/99 were males.
In 1999, 67% of pupils at Scotland’s special schools were male.
In 1999, over 55% of students at Scotland’s Further Education institutions were female.
In 1999/00 there were over 75,000 entrants to Higher Education institutions of whom over 56% were female. The corresponding figures for 1994/95 were 59,000 and 49%.
In 1999/00, over 55% of graduates and diplomates from Scotland’s Higher Education institutions were female.
The proportions of men and women of working age who were participating in some kind of training or education were similar at around 24% in 1999.
