statistics relating to the Environment. The Scottish Government collects few statistics on the environment, but does collate and publish statistics from various sources. This section provides environmental statistics for Scotland together with commentary, metadata and links to sources of additional information.

You may browse directly our Publications or the Scottish Environment Statistics Online database which provides an interactive format and downloadable Excel files, or use the High Level Trends to view a brief overview of some of our key statistics.

Coastal Bathing Water Quality

EC Bathing Water Directive (76/160/ EEC) sets out two quality standards - the 'mandatory' standard, and the stricter 'guideline' standard. Member states should comply with the mandatory standard and aim to comply with the guideline standard. In 2006, 100% of identified coastal bathing waters achieved the mandatory standard, and 56% also complied with the guideline standard. In addition to these coastal bathing waters, the two inland bathing waters both met the mandatory standard
