1. VAT is rebated to business. The rate was 15% until 31 March 1991. From 1 April 1991 it is 17.5%.
2. From June 2000 the figures are for Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP).
3. Diesel-engined road vehicle fuel (derv).
4. From June 2000, the figures are for ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD) which now accounts for virtually all diesel sold.

1. Sampling error is 50 per cent or more.
2. The figures in each column up to 1990/91 refer to the average expenditure over the two year period to minimise sampling errors which would be present if individual years were shown.
3. Data relates to single calendar years.
4. Data relates to single financial years.
5. The figures in this column refer to the average expenditure over the three year period to reduce the effect of the sampling errors which affect individual years' results - eg. "1995/98" is the average of 1995/6, 1996/97 and 1997/98.
6. Based on weighted data and including children's expenditure.
