1. The "Notes and Definitions" describe how DTLR estimates average ages from the details in its Vehicle Information Database, and how the method has changed.
2. Includes all two wheeled motor vehicles.
3. For years up to 1992 estimates are taken from the DVLA annual census, from 1993 onwards estimates are taken from DTLR's
Vehicle Information Database. This may have had an effect on the continuity of the figures.
4. Estimated using DTLR's new method - see the "Notes and Definitions".
5. A change in the level of vehicle excise duty for taxis and hire cars in the 1989 budget led to a fall in the number licensed as public transport vehicles. For years up to 1994 estimates of public transport vehicles include some with 8 or fewer seats. From 1995 onwards
