PROVISIONAL 5-14 ATTAINMENT RESULTS 2000-01

The provisional national figures from the latest annual survey of 5-14 attainment results, for the school year 2000-01, are published today by the Scottish Executive Education Department. More detailed figures will be available in the New Year. Minor amendments may be applied to the figures presented here once final information is available.

These results have been calculated using information from the annual National 5-14 Attainment Survey. This information was collected in June 2001 from all publicly funded primary and secondary schools in Scotland. This news release updates the figures published for the school year 1999-00 in the news release 5-14 Attainment in Publicly Funded Schools 1998/99 (by June 1999) and 1999/00 (by June 2000).

The main findings are:

TABLES

Table 1 - 5-14 Attainment of Pupils in Scotland: percentage of P3, P4, P6 and P7 pupils attaining or exceeding the minimum 5-14 Level for their stage, and the percentage of S2 pupils attaining or exceeding 5-14 Level E, for reading, writing and mathematics, by June 1999, 2000 and 2001.

NOTES TO NEWS EDITORS

  1. The National Survey of 5-14 Attainment Levels is conducted annually by the Education and Children Statistics Unit of the Scottish Executive Education Department (SEED). The first survey was conducted in June 1998, and subsequent surveys have been conducted in June 1999, June 2000 and June 2001. However, the results from the June 1998 survey are not considered to be of sufficient quality to be published.
  2. 5-14 guidance states the following with respect to attainment target levels:
  3. The attainment targets are based on the following descriptions of levels of attainment:

Level A should be attainable in the course of P1-P3 by almost all pupils.

Level B should be attainable by some pupils in P3 or even earlier, but certainly by most in P4.

Level C should be attainable in the course of P4-P6 by most pupils.

Level D should be attainable by some pupils in P5-P6 or even earlier, but certainly by most in P7.

Level E should be attainable by some pupils in P7/S1, but certainly by most in S2.

[Reference: Curriculum and Assessment in Scotland, National Guidelines, English Language 5-14, June 1991, page 9.]

Thus in compiling the figures for Primary in Table 1 the Levels used for P3, P4, P6, P7 respectively were A, B, C, D.

  4. Data collected from Gaelic Medium education establishments have not been included in these results. This is due to current uncertainties surrounding the quality and consistency of the data collected from these establishments.
  5. More detailed figures on 5-14 Attainment will be available in January in the News Release: 5-14 Attainment in Publicly Funded Schools 2000/01.
