Summary
On Scotland's roads in 2000 there were:
- 15,075 injury accidents in which 20,451 people were injured;
- 3,880 people killed or seriously injured (325 of whom died);
- 12,618 casualties in cars, 182 of whom died;
- 3,595 pedestrian casualties, of whom 72 were killed;
- 1,126 motor cyclist casualties (of whom 40 were killed);
- 2,998 child casualties, 561 of whom were killed or seriously injured (21 of them died);
- 1,485 child pedestrian casualties, of whom 379 were killed or seriously injured (13 died).
Between 1990 and 2000:
- The number of fatal accidents fell by 40%, from 491 to 296;
- The total of fatal and serious accidents fell by 43%, from 5,727 to 3,291;
- The total number of accidents (all severities) fell by 25%, from 20,171 to 15,075;
- The number of fatalities fell by 40%, from 546 to 325;
- The total of fatal and serious casualties fell by 43%, from 6,798 to 3,880;
- The total number of casualties (all severities) fell by 25%, from 27,228 to 20,451;
- Car user casualties fell by 13%, from 14,439 to 12,618;
- Pedestrian casualties fell by 42%, from 6,221 to 3,595;
- Pedal cycle casualties fell by 38%, from 1,424 to 879;
- Motor cycle casualties fell by 33%, from 1,681 to 1,126;
- Male casualties fell by 30%, from 16,352 to 11,492;
- Female casualties fell by 18%, from 10,876 to 8,934;
- Casualties aged 16-22 fell by 46%, from 6,647 to 3,584;
- Casualties aged 23-59 fell by 10%, from 12,713 to 11,458;
- Casualties aged 60 and over fell by 28%, from 3,256 to 2,331;
- Child fatalities fell from 48 to 21;
- Child fatal and serious casualties fell by 50%, from 1,131 1990 to 561;
- The total number of child casualties (all severities) fell by 35%, from 4,611 to 2,998;
- Child pedestrian fatalities fell from 30 to 13;
- Child pedestrian fatal and serious casualties fell by 53%, from 803 to 379;
- The total number of child pedestrian casualties fell by 40%, from 2,475 to 1,485;
- The estimated number of drink-drive accidents fell by 28%, from 1,040 to 750 (in 1999), and the estimated number of people killed in such accidents fell from 80 to 60 (in 1999);
- The estimated total cost of all road accidents (including "damage only" accidents) at 2000 prices fell by 36%, from £2,082 million to £1,325 million.
Over the longer-term:
- Between 1950 and 2000 (inclusive), almost 31,800 people were killed, and a total of about 1.3 million people were injured, in accidents on Scotland's roads;
- In 1962 (the earliest year for which a figure is readily available), there were roughly 775,000 vehicles licensed in Scotland, whereas in 2000 the vehicle population stood at 2.2 million. Over the same period, the number of casualties fell from about 26,700 to around 20,500. Thus, whilst the vehicle stock has almost trebled, the number of casualties has actually fallen by approaching a quarter.
