Table 5.10 shows the age breakdown of people with alcohol and drug related problems in private nursing homes from 1997 to 2000. The total number of residents has varied each year with a 9 per cent increase between 1999 and 2000.

In 2000, 62 per cent of residents were under 65 years of age, 20 per cent were aged between 65 and 74 whilst only 18 per cent were over 75.
