Tables 1.15 to 1.19 provide information on long-stay residents only as this level of detail is not collected for short-stay residents.

Table 1.15 presents the number of residents in homes for older people categorised by age group.

The majority of residents in homes for older people are aged 85 or over. This proportion has increased steadily between 1980 and 2000 to represent 59 per cent of residents in 2000. Between 1980 and 2000, an average of 98 per cent of residents in homes for older people were 65 or over.

Table 1.16 illustrates the distribution of incomplete length of stay of residents in residential care homes at 31 March from 1985 to 2000. The highest proportion (around one third) of residents have been in homes for between 1 and 3 years. The distribution has remained fairly stable over time, although the proportion of residents staying for 5 years or more has decreased slightly.

The number of residents entering hospital on discharge from residential homes has steadily declined since 1985 and remained around 20-21 per cent for the last four years. Over the same time period the number of residents transferred to other homes has increased, although the proportion fell slightly between 1998 and 2000. Four per cent of residents were discharged to their own homes in 2000.
