Table 1.10 presents the number of special needs housing dwellings for older people in Scotland from 1980 to 2000. The total number of dwellings has increased over time, from 11,258 in 1980 to 91,398 in 2000. In 2000, all types of sheltered housing accounted for 41% of all special needs housing. Other dwellings with alarms also accounted for 41 per cent of the total with the remainder made up by amenity housing.

Table 1.11 gives a breakdown of the different types of special needs dwellings within each local authority.

In 2000, Clackmannanshire had the highest rate of very sheltered housing, 12.4 per 1,000 of the population aged 65 and over. This accounted for 7 per cent of their total special needs housing stock. In contrast, 3 local authorities had no dwellings within the very sheltered category. The rate for Scotland was 2.1 per 1,000 of the population aged 65 and over.

Dundee City had the highest rate of sheltered dwellings, 156.9 per 1,000 of the population aged 65 and over. At the same time the Scotland rate was 45, whilst the Orkney Islands had only 13.7 dwellings per 1,000 of the population aged 65 and over. Ninety six per cent of Eileanan Siar's housing stock was in the sheltered dwellings' category. Meanwhile in Clackmannanshire only 19 per cent of their stock fell within this category.

1 Figures from 1999 used as 2000 returns are outstanding
2 Dwellings are adapted to suit particular needs of tenants, so numbers in these categories may rise or fall from year to year.
3 Perth & Kinross Council are unable to separately identify local authority "amenity" and "other" dwellings which have alarms. As a result the figure given for "amenity" housing in Perth & Kinross relates to Housing Association dwellings only. The figure given for "other dwellings with alarms" also includes local authority amenity dwellings.
4 Please note the rates refer to dwellings per 1000 population aged 65 and over and not the bed spaces within these dwellings and
therefore need to be interpreted with caution.
