NHS Community Health Services

Table 1.7 presents the number of clients seen by both health visitors and district nurses between 1980 and 2000. Figures include all client groups - not just older people.

It is apparent from table 1.7 that the majority of clients seen by health visitors over the years have been in the under 65 age group, around 82 per cent each year.

In contrast, most people seen by district nurses were 75 or over; just over 50 per cent of the total in recent years.

It can be seen from chart 2 that the number of clients seen by health visitors has been decreasing over the years. At the same time the number of clients seen by district nurses has increased since 1980 but remained fairly stable over the last five years.
