Statistical Bulletin CrJ/2001/1
Reconvictions of Offenders discharged from Custody
or given Non-Custodial Sentences in 1995, Scotland

1. Introduction

1.1 This is the first in a series of bulletins, presenting information on reconvictions of offenders in Scotland. The results provided are based on an analysis of the Scottish Offenders Index, a database which currently covers criminal convictions in Scottish courts between 1989 and 1999. The bulletin considers reconviction rates for all offenders who were released from custody or who were given non-custodial sentences in 1995. Reconviction rates are broken down by the age and sex of offenders, by sentence type and the main crime for which they were convicted and by their previous conviction history. Additional analyses are included on the reconviction rates of cohorts of young offenders and on offenders convicted of violent crime and housebreaking. The effect of "pseudo reconvictions" on reconviction rates is considered, and a comparison is also made with the published reconviction rates for England & Wales and Northern Ireland.

1.2 Detailed technical and other background notes on the analysis presented in the bulletin are given in the Annex.
