9. New vacant or derelict sites

9.1 Table 15 shows the area and number of distinct new sites which have been identified as vacant or derelict since the last survey was conducted.

9.2 Table 15 shows that there were 460 hectares (153 sites) of newly identified derelict land since the 1998 survey. Of these, 176 hectares (54 sites) were in North Lanarkshire and 67 hectares (11 sites) were in Stirling. There were 479 hectares (274 sites) of newly identified vacant land since the 1998 survey. Of these, 213 hectares (55 sites) were in North Lanarkshire, 83 hectares (58 sites) were in Glasgow City, and 47 hectares (7 sites) were in Fife. Most of the increase in North Lanarkshire was due to the inclusion of sites which had previously been omitted in error.

9.3 Of the 939 hectares (427 sites) of newly identified vacant and derelict land, 657 hectares (367 sites), representing 70 per cent of the total, were in urban areas, whereas 282 hectares (60 sites) were in rural areas. Note that these figures relate only to new sites identified since the 1998 survey: sites listed in the previous survey which increased in size are not included.
