5.2 Where the previous use is known, 41 per cent of derelict land recorded in 1999 had formerly been used for mineral activity, whereas the most common previous use for recorded vacant land was for agriculture (36 per cent). The second most common previous use for derelict land was manufacturing, including chemical production, metal works and shipbuilding, accounting for 19 per cent of recorded derelict land. The second most common previous use for vacant land was residential use, accounting for 10 per cent of recorded vacant land, although almost as much land area had previously been used for manufacturing (9 per cent).

5.3 Chart 4 shows the 20 most common previous uses of vacant and derelict land, ranked by area.
