The average household size in Scotland is projected to decrease from 2.31 persons in 1998 to 2.04 persons in 2012. There is projected to be a decrease in the average household size in all local authorities during the period.
East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire had the largest estimated average household sizes in 1998, at 2.58 persons. By 2012 it is projected that East Renfrewshire will have the largest average household size at 2.36 persons, followed by East Dunbartonshire and Midlothian at 2.32 persons.
In 1998 Aberdeen City had the smallest estimated average household size (2.07 persons), followed by Dundee City and the City of Edinburgh with 2.14 and 2.17 persons respectively. By the year 2012, seven local authorities are projected to have average household sizes of less than 2 persons; Aberdeen City being the lowest at 1.79 persons.
