Summary Results Of The September 1999 School Census

Staffing: Teachers

6.8 At September 1999, there were just under 2,000 (FTE) teachers employed in publicly funded special schools. 84.1 per cent of these were female. There was little variation by grade in the percentage who were female, including at Headteacher level, where over three quarters were female.

6.9 Over 1 in 5 of teachers in special schools were working part time. The mode of working of teachers is recorded on a school-by-school basis. Thus staff who work full-time, but in more than one school, will be recorded as working part-time in each of these schools. Similarly, that will include those staff who work in the primary/special or secondary/special departments of a school serving more than one sector. This means that the number of part-time teachers shown in Table 23 will be an over-estimate of the actual number of individual part-time teachers in the special school sector. Part-time working occurred most frequently amongst unpromoted teachers, nearly 30 per cent of whom were working part-time. Part-time working was uncommon in other grades.
