Summary Results Of The September 1999 School Census

6.4 Around one third of pupils in special schools in 1999 were female. This percentage was unchanged from 1998. The percentage was higher in publicly funded schools (34.5 per cent) and lower in independent schools (20.5 per cent). In both sectors, there was little change between 1998 and 1999.

6.5 In 1999, 10 per cent of pupils in special schools attended on a residential basis, slightly less than in 1998. Boys were more likely to attend on a residential basis than girls (11.4 per cent and 7.3 per cent respectively in 1999). This was similar to the 1998 pattern of attendance by sex. Only 2.6 per cent of pupils in publicly funded schools attended on a residential basis in 1999, a decline from 1998. This compared with 69.4 per cent of pupils based at independent schools.
