Summary Results Of The September 1999 School Census

6. Special schools

6.1 The results in Tables 1 and 18 show an increase in the number of Special Schools from 185 in 1998 to 195 in 1999. Much of this increase is due to the inclusion of 9 Special Units in the 1999 results for the first time, which have become more autonomous from their attached Primary and Secondary schools. This increase is in addition to 10 Special Units included in the 1998 results for the first time. The distinction between Special

Units and Special Schools will be considered more closely and may lead to revisions of the results for Special Schools.

6.2 The inclusion of the 9 Special Units in the 1999 results accounts for an increase in the number of teachers (FTE) of 51 and in the number of pupils based in these units of 88. This ought to be considered when comparing the 1999 results with previous years.

Pupils

6.3 Over 8,300 pupils were based in special schools in Scotland in 1999. Of these pupils almost 30 per cent were considered to have moderate learning difficulties, while around 1 in 11 had severe learning difficulties and 1 in 9 had social and emotional difficulties. Nearly 3 in 10 had complex or multiple impairments.
