4.17 Until recently, the class size maxima in primary schools in Scotland was 33 pupils for single stage classes and 25 for composite classes. However, under new regulations recently introduced, the P1 single stage maximum was reduced to 30 in August 1999, and the P2 and P3 single stage maxima will be reduced to 30 in August 2000 and 2001 respectively. Table 11 shows the distribution of pupils in P1-P3 by class size and how this has changed since 1998.
