Summary Results Of The September 1999 School Census

Pupil : Computer Ratios

3.6 New questions on computers in schools were introduced into the September 1999 School Census. The results of these questions can be considered alongside the pupil roll to generate pupil : computer ratios.

3.7 Information on computers in schools was also collected as part of the October 1999 School Survey of Information and Communication Technology (ICT Survey). The results of the ICT Survey were published on 2 May 2000 and also included pupil : computer ratios.

3.8 The results on pupil : computer ratios differed between the September 1999 School Census and the October 1999 ICT Survey. An investigation was carried out to account for this difference.

3.9 The investigation found the following reasons for the differences in the results:

3.10 In order to generate the best national estimate of pupil : computer ratios, results have been used from the September 1999 School Census and the October 1999 ICT Survey as well as the outcome of the above investigation into the differences between these two sources. The best national estimate relates to modern computers less than 4 years old which are used in classrooms and libraries and which are accessible to pupils at October 1999.

3.11 Table 2 below shows the October 1999 best national estimate of pupil : computer ratios as well as the previously published results from the October 1999 ICT Survey.
