Main Findings
Scottish Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in constant basic prices fell 0.4 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2010.
The Construction sector experienced the biggest fall in output of 2.0 per cent over the quarter. Output in the Production sector fell 0.5 per cent, with Manufacturing falling 0.6 per cent. The Services sector experienced an overall fall of 0.1 per cent.
On an annual basis (4Q-on-4Q), GDP grew by 0.8 per cent in 2010, compared to 2009.
GDP Analysed By Industry Sector
During the fourth quarter of 2010, Services sector output in Scotland declined by 0.1 per cent, the Production sector fell 0.5 per cent, and the Construction sector fell 2.0 per cent.
On an annual basis (comparing the most recent four quarters to the previous four quarters), output in the Services sector fell by 0.1 per cent, the Production sector grew by 0.5 per cent, and the Construction sector grew by 11.2 per cent.
Contribution to Growth
The largest contribution to the decline in quarterly output during 2010 Q4 was the Construction sector, followed by Production, Government & Other Services, and Transport, Storage & Communication. These falls were offset slightly by quarterly growth in the Distribution, Hotels & Catering sector.
Index of Production
Total production output fell 0.5 per cent during 2010 Q4, compared with a fall of 0.3 per cent in 2010 Q3.
Manufacturing fell 0.6 per cent, following growth of 0.2 per cent in the previous quarter. The main contributors to this fall were the Other Manufacturing sector (-3.9%), Refined Petroleum Products & Nuclear Fuel Processing (-9.1%), and Chemicals & Manmade Fibres (-1.8%). There was significant growth in Engineering & Allied Industries (+1.4%).
Output in Mining and Quarrying decreased by 5.1 per cent during 2010 Q4 compared with a fall of 2.6 per cent in 2010 Q3. Electricity, Gas & Water Supply grew 2.0 per cent, following a fall of 1.9 per cent in 2010 Q3.
Index of Construction
Construction output fell 2.0 per cent during 2010 Q4, following growth of 6.2 per cent in 2010 Q3.
Index of Services
Overall output in the Services sector fell 0.1 per cent during 2010 Q4, following a flat quarter in 2010 Q3.
Distribution, Hotels and Catering
Output in Distribution, Hotels and Catering increased 0.3 per cent during 2010 Q4, following growth of 0.3 per cent in 2010 Q3. The main source of this growth was in Retail and Wholesale (+0.5%).
Transport, Storage and Communication
Transport, storage and communication fell 0.8 per cent during 2010 Q4, following growth of 0.4 per cent in 2010 Q3. The main source of this decline was the Transport & Storage component (-1.6%).
Business Services and Finance
Output in Business Services and Finance was flat in 2010 Q4, following a fall of 0.5 per cent in 2010 Q3. Financial Services experienced a fall (-1.4%) during 2010 Q4, while output in Real Estate & Business Services grew by 0.4 per cent.
Government and Other Services
Output in Government and Other Services decreased 0.3 per cent during 2010 Q4, compared with growth of 0.2 per cent in 2010 Q3. The main source of this decline was the Other Services sector (-2.5%).
UK Figures
The latest figures show that UK GDP on a comparable basis (constant basic prices) fell by 0.5 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2010.
On an annual basis (4Q-on-4Q), UK GDP grew by 1.4 per cent.
Comparing total output in 2010 to 2009 (4Q-on-4Q), the UK experienced growth of 1.1 per cent in Services, growth of 2.0 per cent in the Production sector, and growth of 6.0 per cent in Construction.
In the fourth quarter of 2010, the UK Services sector fell by 0.6 per cent, the Production sector grew by 0.8 per cent, and output in the Construction sector fell by 2.3 per cent.
