School uniforms

We are developing national guidance on school uniforms. This will be published by August 2024.

The guidance aims to help reduce costs for families, while ensuring pupils can go to school feeling comfortable and ready to learn.

We ran a public consultation on school uniforms in 2022, and will use the responses received to help shape the guidance.

A school uniform working group has been set up to develop the guidance.

Local councils and individual schools decide on school uniform policy at local level. The national guidance will help inform those policies.

There is no legal requirement to wear school uniform in Scotland. The new guidance will not change this.
