21/04/2004
Dh'fhoillsich Ministear an Fhoghlaim Peadar Peacock
an-diugh gu robh foghlam Gàidhlig a' faighinn taic-ionmhais
a bharrachd.
(English version below)
Gheibh Storlann, an t-ionad airson stuthan-teagaisg
foghlam Gàidhlig, £90,000 airson:
- leabhraichean Gàidhlig ùra agus stuthan
ionnsachaidh agus teagaisg eile ullachadh do
bhunsgoiltean
- cùrsa cruinn-eòlais air-loidhne do chloinn aig
toiseach na h-àrdsgoile

A' foillseachadh an airgid a bharrachd, thuirt Mgr
Peacock:
"Feumaidh sinn dèanamh cinnteach gum bi a' Ghàidhlig
air a dìon do ghinealaich ri teachd. 'S e ceum mòr air
adhart a tha ann am Bile na Gàidhlig ach tha fios againn
gum feumar airgead a chur an seilbh ann am foghlam Gàidhlig
cuideachd ma tha an cànan gu bhith beò agus a' fàs.
"Cuidichidh na chaidh a chur an seilbh an-diugh a' cur
ris na tha ann de ghoireasan-teagaisg airson foghlam
Gàidhlig. O chionn ghoirid bha mi san aonad Ghàidhlig ann
am Bunsgoil Chaitligeach a' Ghearasdain, agus thuirt
tidsearan rium gu robh feum air tuilleadh stuthan
ionnsachaidh airson cuideachadh a' leudachadh foghlam
Gàidhlig. Tha mi toilichte gu bheil e comasach dhomh an
taic sin a thoirt dhaibh gun dàil."
Thuirt Mairead Dhòmhnallach, Stiùiriche Stòrlann:
"Tha sinn air leth toilichte leis an airgead a bharrachd
seo a bheir cothrom dhuinn a bhith nas luaithe le ceithir
pròiseactan cudthromach a thoirt gu buil. Tha iad sin a'
gabhail a-staigh caochladh fheuman ionnsachaidh bho
thoiseach na bunsgoile agus air adhart gu na h-àrdsgoiltean
agus cuiridh tidsearan fàilte mhòr air."
Tha Storlann Naiseanta na Gaidhlig stèidhichte an Eilean
Leòdhais agus chaidh a chur air bhonn an 1998 gus
stuthan-teagaisg ullachadh airson foghlam Gàidhlig. Tha
iad ag obrachadh gu dlùth le Ionnsachadh is Teagasg Alba
agus o chionn ghoirid dh'obraich iad còmhla airson Gàidhlig
air-loidhne a stèidheachadh le goireasan-teagaisg
air-loidhne airson foghlam Gàidhlig.
Bidh an t-airgead a chaidh ainmeachadh an-diugh don
Storlann air a chleachdadh mar a leanas:
- thèid £30,000 gu ullachadh suas ri còig
leabhraichean Gàidhlig a bhios freagarrach airson an
cleachdadh le cloinn san treas agus an ceathramh
bliadhna den bhunsgoil

a-steach don Phàrlamaid air an t-samhradh seo.
FURTHER BOOST FOR GAELIC EDUCATION
A cash injection for Gaelic learning was announced today
by Education Minister Peter Peacock.
Storlann, the Gaelic education resource centre, will
receive £90,000 to:
• develop new Gaelic books and other learning and
teaching materials for primary schools
• expand an online geography course for early secondary
pupils
• publish a wall map of Scotland in Gaelic.
Announcing the cash, Mr Peacock said:
"We must safeguard Gaelic's future for generations to
come. Our Gaelic Bill represents a major step forward but
we recognise that investing in Gaelic education is also
vital if the language is to not only survive but
thrive.
"Today's investment will help expand the range of Gaelic
education resources. When I recently visited the Gaelic
medium unit at Fort William Roman Catholic Primary School,
teachers told me more learning materials were needed to
help Gaelic education grow. I am happy to be able to
positively respond so quickly."
Mairead MacDonald, Director of Stòrlann, said:
"We are delighted with this additional funding which
will enable us to accelerate the delivery of four
important projects. These cover a range of learning needs
from early primary through to secondary schools and will be
very miuch welcomed by teachers."
Storlann Naiseanta na Gaidhlig (the National Gaelic
Resource Centre) is based on the Isle of Lewis and was
established in 1998 to produce materials for Gaelic
education. They work closely with Learning and Teaching
Scotland and have recently collaborated with them to
establish Gaelic on-line which contains on-line resources
for Gaelic education.
The money announced today for Storlann will be used as
follows:
- £30,000 will be used to produce up to five Gaelic
books suitable for use with children in the third and
fourth year of primary school
- £20,000 will be used by the organisation Gaelic
Language in the Primary School (GLPS) to design and
publish teaching materials
- £30,000 will be used to extend a pilot S1 online
geography course to S2
- £10,000 to produce a map of Scotland in Gaelic - a
world map produced last year was very well
received.
The draft
Gaelic Bill was published for consultation in October
and is expected to be introduced to Parliament this
summer.
