Local Government Finance Review

28/12/2004

A new website providing details of the work of the independent Local Government Finance Review Committee was launched today.

The website will allow people to keep up to date with the work of the independent committee which was set up by the Executive to review different forms of local taxation - including reform of the council tax - against a range of criteria.

The website includes details of the committee's remit, group members, working papers and other relevant information.

Sir Peter Burt, Chairman of the Committee, said:

"Local taxation and the services it helps to fund are issues which affect every one of us.

"As a committee, we will have to study carefully a wide range of often complex issues over the coming months - this website will help to highlight some of these issues and will also make clear how organisations and individuals can get involved in this important debate."

The committee will shortly publish a consultation paper. This will provide anyone with an interest in the future of local government finance with the opportunity to provide the Committee with their views.

The Local Government Finance Review Committee was established in June 2004.

Its purpose is 'to identify the pros and cons of implementing any changes to the local taxation system in Scotland, including the practicalities and the implications for the rest of the local government finance system and any wider economic impact, and to make recommendations'.

It plans to report to Ministers in Summer 2006.

The committee's members are Sir Peter Burt (Chairman), Professor John Baillie, Peter Daniels and Janet Lowe. It also has a specialist adviser, Kenneth McKay.
