'Archers' Fatality - HSE inspector to investigate

26/02/1998

An Inspector from the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE's) local office will be at Bridge Farm, Ambridge, today to begin a formal investigation into the circumstances of the tractor-overturning accident in which John Archer, eldest son of Tony and Pat Archer, was killed.

David Mattey, HSE's Chief Agricultural Inspector, said: "This tragic accident should help to bring home to everyone the devastating effects that such needless accidents can have on farming families. In circumstances like this HSE always needs to establish exactly what happened to see if there are any lessons to be learned.

"The accident is a poignant reminder that in the last six years 41 people have been killed in similar accidents when farm vehicles have overturned. HSE has made great efforts to publicise the risks of vehicles overturning and to explain how these accidents can be avoided. There is a free, simple to follow booklet 'Tractor Action' which is a step by step safety guide. Every farm worker should have a copy - it could save their life. Call HSE Books - 01787 881165 for a free copy."

Single copies of 'Tractor Action', IND(G)185L, are available free of charge from HSE Books, PO Box 1999, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 6FS, tel: 01787 881165 or fax: 01787 313995. Packs of ten copies, with a free wallchart, cost £9.75.
