Home Robertson notes rural affairs committee&#39s report on adjacent waters sea boundary

09/12/1999

The Scottish Executive has noted the terms of the report published by the Rural Affairs Committee on the Scottish Adjacent Waters Boundaries Order 1999 today.

The Committee accepted the need for definition of the Scottish and English areas of the North Sea, but the report proposes that the southern boundary of the Scottish zone of British fishery limits in the North Sea should be moved south from its current median line position to a position defined in the Civil Jurisdiction (Offshore Activities) Order 1987.

The report goes on to call for consideration at Westminster of a revised boundary line.

Deputy Minister for Rural Affairs John Home Robertson said:

"The Scottish Executive remains committed to safeguarding the interests of Scottish fishing communities, including the rights of Scottish fishermen to fish where they always have done. I have yet to see a convincing argument that the current boundary poses any practical disadvantages to Scottish fishermen."
