Introduction
Parents' rights in relation to their children's education include the right to have information about their children's school, to have a say in their children's education through School Boards, and to have a quick and effective means of redress when things go wrong.
Parents have the right to express a preference for a particular school that they want their children to attend. This booklet gives information for parents in Scotland about choosing a local Council school. It gives a general explanation of the law relating to these placing requests and sets out the procedures that parents and local Councils have to follow.
This booklet cannot give a definitive interpretation of the law.
That is a matter for the Courts.
Information in this booklet should answer most of your questions. If you want more information or have queries, you may wish to contact your local Council (see addresses and telephone numbers in the back of the booklet), the headteacher of your local school, the local parents' association or School Board.
