* The revised Child Strategy Statement asks those dealing with policy areas affecting children to consider whether it might be appropriate to take into account the views of children, either directly or through a representative organisation. The organisations listed above fall loosely into 3 categories:

Category A - those that seek to represent the views of children directly, sometimes in an advocacy role. They may be particularly able to help where children's views are sought directly, e.g. through focus groups.

Category B - those that specialise in children's services and issues but are less focussed on a representational or advocacy role.

Category C - those that cover a particular topic, e.g. a type of disability, as it effects the whole population including, but not only, children. These organisations have been included as they cover areas of interest that might not otherwise be taken into account.

These classifications are intended to help clarify the roles various organisations undertake. They are not intended to imply that any particular role is more valuable than others. It should also be borne in mind that such classifications are never clear-cut and, for example, organisations that do not specialise in representation or advocacy may undertake this on occasion.

The Scottish Executive is conscious that children's services and issues is a rapidly developing sector. We would welcome any suggestions for further organisations that might be added to this list. Please contact Gita Jackson (Miss), Children and Families Division, 2B(N) Victoria Quay, Edinburgh, EH6 6QQ; Tel: 0131 244 7670; Fax: 0131 244 0978; E-mail: Gita.Jackson@scotland.gsi.gov.uk
