6. Construction Type

6.1 Table 9 below outlines the type of construction activity granted planning consent in each local authority. It shows that of the 77 planning applications that were granted consent during 1998, 13 were proposals for alteration / conversion involving some 59,000 sq. m; 8 were proposals for extension, involving some 57,000 sq. m; whilst 56 related to new build proposals, totalling some 345,000 sq. m.

6.3 Table 10 (over) apportions these figures to structure plan areas. The table shows that the Glasgow and Clyde Valley area had more than three times the level of approved floorspace for alteration / conversion than Lothian, the next highest area. It also had more than twelve times the approved level of floorspace for extensions and almost three times the level of approved floorspace for new build development than the next highest area, which was again Lothian in both instances.
