1998 Retail Development Survey

4. Retail Floorspace

4.1 Table 3 indicates the amount of floorspace at each planning stage in each authority. It shows that Aberdeen had the highest amount proposed in planning applications, followed by Glasgow, Edinburgh and South Lanarkshire. Applications totalling over 20,000 sq. m were also recorded at Dundee, Falkirk, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire and West Lothian. Glasgow approved the most floorspace, followed by North Lanarkshire, Edinburgh and Renfrewshire.

Table 3

4.2 Aberdeen refused the most floorspace without prospect of further appeal (23,000 sq. m), followed by Renfrewshire (21,000 sq. m) and Scottish Borders (14,000 sq. m). Edinburgh had the highest amount refused consent, pending potential appeal (104,000 sq. m) followed by North Lanarkshire (32,000 sq. m) and Dumfries and Galloway (24,000 sq. m). Glasgow had the most under construction (172,000 sq. m), followed by Dundee (25,000 sq. m) and South Lanarkshire (22,000 sq. m), whilst Clackmannanshire had the most newly trading floorspace (18,000 sq. m), followed by Glasgow (15,000 sq. m) and Edinburgh (14,000 sq. m).

4.3 Table 4 sets out the floorspace totals at the different planning stages for each of the major Cities. Whilst Aberdeen had the highest amount submitted, Glasgow approved more floorspace and had more floorspace under construction and newly trading than any of the other major cities.

4.4 Table 5 sets out the amount of retail floorspace at the different planning stages across Structure Plan areas. The Glasgow and Clyde Valley area had the highest level of floorspace in submitted applications, as well as the most approved, refused, under construction, and newly trading. Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire had the second highest amount in submitted applications. The Lothian area had the most at appeal, and the second highest amount approved. Dundee and Angus had the second highest amount under construction, followed by Lothian; whilst Stirling and Clackmannan were second highest in terms of newly trading floorspace, again followed by Lothian.
