2. Intermediate Inspections conducted by the Prisons Inspectorate: April 1999 - March 2000

The way in which intermediate inspections are carried out now culminates in an updated 'General Assessment', with each establishment receiving such an assessment once every 12 months; previously, this had only occurred every three or four years as part of the formal inspection process. Where appropriate, intermediate inspections can now last several days, particularly where recent formal inspections have indicated the need for extensive remedial work.

  • The Inspectorate Team presented a summary of the 1998-99 Annual Report to the Justice and Home Affairs Committee on 14 September 1999. Subsequently, members of the Committee visited HM Remand Institution Longriggend and HMP Low Moss.
  • There was a further appearance before the Committee on 11 January 2000.
