SPS Establishments and Capacity

North and East

1. HMP Aberdeen

Local/remand prison, southern side of Aberdeen. Capacity 163, including 10 places for female prisoners.

2. HMP Castle Huntly

Open prison near Dundee for convicted adult male offenders. Capacity 150.

3. HMP Edinburgh

Local short-term/remand and national long-term prison, western outskirts of Edinburgh. Capacity 643.

[4. HMP Friarton

Closed prison on southern outskirts of Perth for short-term convicted Category 'C' adult males with less than 12 months left to serve. Capacity 90. (Merged with HMP Perth and due to take on role previously carried out by HMP Dungavel on 3 July 2000.)]

5. HMP and HMYOI Glenochil

Closed establishment for adult males serving sentences of over 4 years and for YOs with over 2 and less than 8 months to serve. Capacity 496 adult and 174 YO. (14 places temporarily out of use in prison.)

6. HMP Inverness

Local/remand prison, close to City Centre. Capacity 108, including 6 places for female prisoners.

7. HMP Noranside

Open prison west of Forfar for Category 'D' adult males serving between 2 and (but not including) 10 years plus up to 10 life sentence prisoners. Capacity 135.

8. HMP Perth

Local short-term convicted/remand and national long-term prison, south of town centre. Capacity 436 (with 48 places temporarily out of use). 14% overcrowded.

9. HMP Peterhead

Closed establishment south of Peterhead for adult male long term prisoners convicted of sex offences. Capacity 295.

[10. HM Unit Peterhead

Long term prisoners unable to cope with mainstream prison, capacity 10. 'Mothballed' January 2000.]

11. HMYOI Polmont

Closed Institution south of Falkirk for male Young Offenders serving less than 6 years. Capacity 430. (Reallocated to South and West with effect from 1 July 2000.)

South and West

12. HMP Barlinnie

Local/remand prison, Riddrie, Glasgow. Capacity 1,020 (with 184 places out of use). 18% overcrowded.

13. HMP & YOI

Adult and YO female prisoners and remands, Bridge of Allan. Capacity 217 (with 39 places temporarily out Cornton Vale of use).

14. HMP and HMYOI Dumfries

Closed Institution on western outskirts of Dumfries for long term YOs and local/remand prisoners. Capacity 150, including 8 places for female prisoners (with 49 places temporarily out of use).

15. HMP Dungavel

Closed prison south of Strathaven for long-term Category 'C' adult males, serving sentences of between 4 and 10 years. Capacity 135 in dormitories (with 9 places out of use). [Due for closure 3 July 2000.]

16. HMP Greenock

Local/remand and national long-term prison for adult male prisoners, southern outskirts of Greenock. Capacity 241 (with 4 places temporarily out of use).

17. HMP Kilmarnock

Local short term/remand prison and national long-term prison south of Kilmarnock. Capacity 500.

[18. HM Remand

Remand unit, north of Airdrie, for males under 21 years of age, persons awaiting deportation and selected Institution Longriggend adult prisoners. Capacity 176. (Shut on 8 April 2000; prisoners transferred to HMP Barlinnie.)]

19. HMP Low Moss

Closed prison near Kirkintilloch for Category 'C' or 'D' adult males serving short sentences. Capacity 396 in dormitories.

[20. HMP Penninghame

Open prison north of Newton Stewart for long term category 'D' adult males. (Shut on 6 March 2000.)]

21. HMP Shotts

Closed prison near village of Shotts for long term adult male prisoners. Capacity 462.

[22. HM Unit Shotts

Long term prisoners unable to cope with mainstream prison, capacity 12. (Merged with main prison on 31 March 2000.)]

[23. HM National

Closed prison for adult male prisoners serving over 10 years at the start of their sentence. Capacity 54. Induction Centre (Merged with main prison on 31 March 2000.)]

24. HMP Zeist

Temporary Scottish Prison created in Holland to hold two prisoners on trial for alleged involvement in the Lockerbie bombing. Capacity 6.

 

The SPS population and accommodation report identifies the design capacity for the whole of the estate as 6,369 plus 130 places of temporary accommodation (Barlinnie 76, Edinburgh 46, Polmont 8) giving a grand total of 6,499. However, with 104 places out of use for policy reasons and a further 256 temporarily out of use for refurbishment, the available capacity was actually 6,139 for an average population of 5,974.
