For Scotland's children report
Poverty & Deprivation
Figure 2
Definitions: The indicator is defined as the proportion of dependent children
aged under 19 in Scotland who are in households where no one is in work.
Notes: When interpreting these figures it is important to note that they
are subject to sampling errors and therefore year-on-year changes should be
considered with caution. The conclusion that can be drawn from the data is that
between 1993 and 2000 the percentage of children in workless households has
reduced slightly.

Initially these data were derived from the spring quarter of the Labour Force
Survey which is run by the Office for National Statistics.

Definitions: The definition of low income is given as households whose equivalised
net income is below 60% of the median Great British household equivalised net
income after housing costs have been accounted for. Figure 4 shows income in
relative terms, i.e. comparisons are made independently year on year. Figure
5 shows income in absolute terms, that is comparisons are made against the 1996/7
income levels in real terms. For further definitions go to source.
Notes: The time periods covered in the charts are not regular.
