Economic Impacts of a Ban on Hunting with Dogs in Scotland.

Preface by the Scottish Executive

The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute was commissioned by the Scottish Executive to investigate the likely impacts the enactment of Lord Watson’s Protection of Wild Mammals Bill would have on the rural economy and jobs.

The intention of the study was to provide factual and impartial information to help inform the debate.

The research was never intended to be all embracing or to cover all activities involving hunting with dogs. The investigation of the possible effects on mounted hunts, followers of the hunts, local businesses supplying goods and services to the hunts as well as the activities of the Scottish Hill Packs Association and gamekeepers was intended to focus attention on some of the more contentious issues and activities where the level of public interest has been high. Other issues which may arise from Lord Watson’s Bill can be addressed by other means during the passage of the Bill.
