anadromous

describing fish that are born in fresh water, migrate to sea, then return to fresh water to spawn

Atlantic salmon

the species Salmo salar

baits and lures regulation

regulations prohibiting the use of certain baits and lures by anglers

biodiversity

the variability of living organisms, and of interactions between them and with their habitats

brown trout

freshwater resident form of the trout Salmo trutta

catch and release

the capture and subsequent release alive of fish by anglers

cetaceans

whales, dolphins, porpoises

close time

period when fishing is not permitted

coarse fish

freshwater fish other than "game" fish

Coho salmon

the species Oncorhynchus kisutch, one of the species of Pacific salmon

cyprinid

fish belonging to the family that includes the carps, minnows, barbels and similar species

early-running

describing salmon which enter rivers during the winter and spring months

exploitation

any means by which fish are removed from any stock and killed by man

ferox trout

large, almost wholly piscivorous form of the trout Salmo trutta

flexible

exhibiting a wide range of morphological types

game fish

a term sometimes used for salmon and all kinds of trout

ghillie

fishing attendant accompanying anglers

grilse

salmon which has first matured, or is about to mature, after one winter in the sea

introduction

the intentional or accidental transportation and release by man of species or races into an environment outside their natural range

ledgering

a method of bait fishing involving the use of a weighted, set line.

mixed-stock fishery

a fishery that exploits fish of the same species but from a number of different stocks

multi-sea-winter salmon

salmon which has spent two or more winters at sea

net economic value

the total sum of an individual's willingness to pay for an activity or service, minus the opportunity costs of the resources used in providing it

Pacific salmon

fish of species belonging to the genus Oncorhynchus, native to the Pacific ocean and rivers that drain into it

parr

young salmon, at the stage from dispersal from redd to migration as a smolt

salmon fishery district

an area within fixed coastal limits including the catchment area of each river which flows directly or indirectly into the sea within these limits, and extending seaward for three miles from mean low water springs

salmonid

describing fish belonging to the Salmonidae, which includes the salmon Salmo salar and the trout Salmo trutta

sea trout

migratory form of the trout Salmo trutta after the post-smolt stage

smolt

fully-silvered juvenile salmon migrating or about to migrate to the sea

transfer

the intentional or accidental transportation and release of individuals of a species or of populations into an environment within their natural range

vagrant

occasional visitor that does not breed here
