Trunk Road Biodiversity Action Plan: Review for Discussion

natural heritage zone 8

WESTERN HIGHLANDS

A87 Kyle of Lochalsh - Loch Cluanie / A830 Mallaig - Kinlocheil

The Western Highland Zone is an area renowned for its great scenic beauty. Covering an area of some 2,600 km2, it stretches down the west mainland coast from Loch Kishorn to Loch Linnhe. With nine sea lochs often penetrating deeply through the coastal hills and into the mountainous interior, the actual coastline is some 826 km in length. Rugged mountain ranges and individual summits pepper the Western Highlands, with the highest mostly in the northern half of the area, including several well-known climbing peaks such as the Five Sisters of Glenshiel and the Knoydart and Morar peaks. Nestling between these are three large and many smaller freshwater lochs.

The small proportion of low lying, flatter ground occurs along a few sections of this coast and in some straths, and it is here that the population of 17,000 are mainly located, particularly in the larger settlements of Fort William, Mallaig and Kyle of Lochalsh. The economy of the Western Highlands continues to revolve around its natural resources. Fishing, fish farming, agriculture and forestry are all still important but tourism is now the most important element of the economy, based primarily on the superb natural heritage and rich cultural history.
