Examination Results in Scottish Schools 1997-99

1.3 Comparisons over time

Graph 4 indicates that the number of Standard Grade presentations per pupil is relatively stable at just under 8. You should note that the figures include subjects such as French (Writing) as a separate presentation.

Trends in performance at Standard Grade are illustrated by Graphs 5 and 6. To enable more realistic comparisons to be made between years, the No Awards information has been excluded from Graph 5. Thus the percentages gaining Credit, General and Foundation awards are expressed as a percentage of the presentations excluding No Awards. Course Completed awards amounted to less than 1% of all awards in each year. Graph 5 shows that the percentage of presentations resulting in Credit Awards in 1999 pre-appeal is similar to the 1998 post appeal level. The percentage of S4 presentations resulting in a General Award continues to fall slightly, whereas the 1999 figure for Foundation Awards shows a slight increase on the 1998 figure.
