8 Neighbourhood problems

Respondents were asked to say whether they experience any of a number of neighbourhood problems in their area. Table 15 shows the proportions for whom these issues are 'very' or 'fairly' common.

The problem experienced by the highest proportion of the population is groups of young people hanging around their neighbourhood. This is a common problem for almost a third of the population. People in the area type described as 'families in council flats' (see definition in Section 11) most commonly experience each of the problems looked at in the survey. However, other council areas and the 'renting singles' areas are also more likely than owner-occupied or country areas to report each of the problems as common.

Two per cent of households reported having been burgled in the 12 months leading up to the survey. Although the number of cases in each type of area is small, the proportion is highest in the areas described as 'families in council flats', where 6% reported having been burgled (no table).

The proportion who had been burgled was the same as the proportion reporting having experienced a fire in their home (2%) and, again, the proportion was highest in the 'families in council flats' areas where 7% reported having experienced a fire in the previous year (no table).
