Scottish Household Survey Bulletin No.2

Consumer durables

Possession of some consumer durables is less strongly related to household income. Table 8 shows the proportion of households in each income band who reported having each of the consumer durables asked about in the survey

In the case of three of the five durables covered by the survey - namely fridge/freezer, washing machine and telephone - almost 9 in 10 households in the lowest income band said they had each item. This fell to 3 in 10 for access to a motor vehicle and to 1 in 10 for personal computers. Among the higher income households, ownership of these durables is almost universal, with the exception of personal computers. However, 57% of households in the highest income band have a computer compared with 10% in the lowest income band.

In terms of consumer durables, the difference between the income groups is best illustrated by Figure 1, which shows the proportion of households in each income band who reported that they have all five of the items asked about in the survey. Overall, a fifth of households said they have all five, ranging from 5% of households in the lowest income band to 53% in the highest income band.
