2 For 10 sites, the distinction between urban and rural is unspecified. There is one in Aberdeenshire (0.41 ha), two in Dundee (4.89 ha in total), two in Fife (0.90 ha in total), two in North Lanarkshire (0.75 ha in total), one in South Ayrshire (0.32 ha) and two in South Lanarkshire (17.92 ha in total).

8.2 The authorities with the highest levels of urban derelict land in 1998 were Glasgow (883 hectares), North Lanarkshire (835 hectares) and South Lanarkshire (270 hectares). While the authorities with the highest levels of rural derelict land were West Lothian (607 hectares), North Lanarkshire (550 hectares), Fife (540 hectares) and East Ayrshire (385 hectares). The table also shows the split for total area and number of sites for each council, these imply that on average urban sites are smaller than rural sites, for example in Scotland, 49 per cent of derelict land is urban, while 65 per cent of derelict sites are urban.
