Case Study 1
Mark is a six-year-old with severe physical disability and no speech. He seems to be responsive to others but has difficulty in interacting because of this physical impairment.
Mark has a place in another local authority school as his own local authority has no suitable placement.

Case Study 2
John has severe hearing loss and diagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). He attends a grant-aided school on a daily basis. Due to his behavioural problems, the agreement for placement at the school includes the employment of a full-time classroom assistant.

John will eventually become resident at the school but this is being phased in, starting with one overnight stay per week. During this transitional period, transport and escort costs remain as this is a contract and the authority will have residential fees to meet also.
Costs of £520 were also incurred for respite care during a school holiday.
Case Study 3
Louise has autistic spectrum disorder and severe learning difficulties. On many occasions her behaviour is extremely challenging. Louise has two younger siblings and the need for respite care was increasing to such an extent that it was considered that a residential school placement would offer stability for Louise and her family.
