In terms of pupils with a Record of Needs by educating authority, 2.7 percent of pupils educated in Aberdeen City, Glasgow City and Renfrewshire had a Record of Needs in 1997. This compared with 0.8 percent of pupils educated in West Dunbartonshire, Orkney Islands and East Lothian. Glasgow educated approximately one sixth of all Recorded pupils within its own provision.

1 Excluding pupils in nursery schools.
* Small numbers have been asterisked to avoid disclosure of individuals or small groups.

The highest proportions of pupils with SLID were educated in Aberdeen City where 1.8 percent of pupils educated has a main difficulty of learning in a SLID category in 1997. East Lothian educated the lowest proportion of pupils with SLID, 0.3 percent of pupils educated in East Lothian had SLID.

Overall, there were more pupils with a Record of Needs than SLID. It may be interesting to note that in the independent sector the number of pupils with SLID was higher than the number of pupils with a Record of Needs. It would appear that most pupils based in independent special schools do not have a Record of Needs.

In The City of Edinburgh and West Lothian the number of pupils with a Record of Needs was similar to the number of pupils with SLID. This was in contrast with East Lothian where the number of recorded pupils was very different to the number of pupils with SLID.

Comparing the total school pupils in tables 1a.1, 1a.2 and 1b with tables 2a and 2b shows a difference of 367 pupils. This is due to the totals in tables 1a.1, 1a.2 and 1b excluding 333 pupils not funded by a Local Authority and 34 pupils funded out-with Scotland. Table 2a is not a subset of table 2b, as not all SLID pupils will have a Record of Needs.
