School Attainment and Qualifications of School Leavers in Scotland: 1997-98

7. Subject grouping of school leavers’ qualifications

7.1 Ninety-one per cent of all school leavers in 1997-98 gained a Standard Grade award @ 1-7 in a mathematical subject whilst in S4, while the corresponding percentages for English, science subjects and social subjects were all over 85 per cent.

7.2 The subject groupings with the highest percentages of leavers holding a Standard Grade award @ 1-3 from S4 were English (67 per cent), Science subjects (62 per cent), Social subjects (52 per cent) and Mathematical subjects (49 per cent).

7.3 A third (32 per cent) of school leavers in 1997-98 held a Higher pass (Band A-C) in English. Around 20 per cent of leavers held a Higher pass in Mathematical subjects, while similar percentages held a Higher pass in Science subjects (22 per cent) and Social subjects (21 per cent). Only 7 per cent of school leavers held a Higher pass in a language other than English, with this proportion being 4 per cent for boys and 11 per cent for girls.

7.4 In all subject groupings except Physical Education, higher percentages of girls than boys held Standard Grade awards @ 1-3 or Higher passes on leaving school. The gap was particularly pronounced for Other languages and for Creative and aesthetic subjects.
