Qualifications of school leavers: variations by stage of leaving for SCE qualifications
6.12 As shown in Table 22, pupils generally leave better qualified the longer they remain at school. In 1997-98, for example, only 16 per cent of leavers from the S5 summer term held 3 or more Higher passes, compared with 59 per cent of leavers from S6.
6.13 Similarly, the proportion of leavers with no SCE qualifications or only Standard Grade awards @ 4-7 was higher for those who left earlier. In 1997-98, 18 per cent of all pupils leaving school had no SCE qualifications or only Standard Grade awards @ 4-7 (Table 15). This proportion was 4 per cent for S6 leavers but 40 per cent for pupils who left in the winter term of S5 or before.
