(1) Includes the small number of pupils who left school at the end of S3.

Staying-on rates in publicly funded secondary schools

5.6 Independent schools (where most pupils stay on to S6) and special schools and departments, have been excluded from this section.

5.7 Information for 1997-98 shows that 77 per cent of all pupils stayed on into S5 compared with 62 per cent in 1987-88. Some pupils enter S5 because they have not reached the school leaving age, but leave at the earliest opportunity, usually at the end of the winter term. The S5 (voluntary) staying-on rate, which excludes such pupils, gives a better measure of the proportion of pupils who choose to continue their school education. In 1997-98, the S5 (voluntary) staying-on rate was 67 per cent, little changed from the level of the previous few years but well above the 1987-88 figure of 50 per cent.

5.8 The percentage of pupils staying on to S6 nearly doubled between 1987-88 and 1997-98, increasing from 23 per cent to 42 per cent, although it has remained fairly level since 1993-94.

(1) The data for 1987-88 to 1989-90 are for education authority schools only.
(2) S5 stage staying-on rates are based on S3 pupils 2 years earlier, and S6 rates on S3 pupils 3 years earlier.
(3) The voluntary staying-on rate excludes pupils who leave school in S5 on reaching the school leaving age at the end of the first term. From 1993-94, data are not strictly comparable with earlier years (see annex, section 1.3 for details).
