5.5 Throughout the period since 1987-88, boys were more likely than girls to leave at the school leaving age. For example, in 1987-88, 45 per cent of boys left on reaching the school leaving age, compared to 37 per cent of girls. By 1997-98, these percentages had fallen to 34 per cent and 26 per cent respectively. This differential between boys and girls has remained fairly constant, at around 8 to 10 percentage points.
