5.1 In 1997-98, 62,483 pupils left Scottish schools, about 3,500 less than in 1996-97. Of the total, 31,828 (51 per cent) were boys and 30,655 (49 per cent) were girls (Table 12).
5.2 The percentage of pupils leaving at the school leaving age has been around 30 per cent since 1992-93, following a decline from 41 per cent in 1987-88. Most pupils who leave school at the school leaving age, leave in S4 or at the end of the winter term in S5 (Table 10).
5.3 The number of school leavers who left from S6 was 46 per cent in 1997-98 as compared with 28 per cent in 1987-88. For independent schools, there was a substantially higher number of leavers from S6 (75 per cent) than from publicly funded schools (44 per cent) (Table 11).
5.4 Pupils with special educational needs tended to leave school earlier than leavers in general; 36 per cent left at the school leaving age (Table 11).
